New Infantry Museum Gets
Million Dollar Boost
Columbus, Georgia - January 7, 2003: The National
Infantry Foundation is pleased to announce its first corporate million
dollar pledge. United Defense Industries, Inc. is donating $1 million
to the Foundation for the construction of a new National Infantry
Museum and Heritage Park.
United Defense is an Arlington, Va.-based defense
contracting company that supplies the U.S. Army with the Bradley
Fighting Vehicle as well as development of manned ground vehicles
for the U.S. Army’s Future Combat Systems program.
"We are particularly proud to be a founding
contributor toward this worthy effort," said President and
CEO Tom Rabaut. "The history of our company is entwined with
the history of the American Infantryman. Through this museum his
courageous efforts and sacrifices to protect our freedom will never
be forgotten."
National Infantry Foundation Executive Director
Ben Williams noted the significance of the gift. "In light
of recent world events, now is the time to erect this long-overdue
tribute to the American Infantryman. United Defense understands
the importance of this project and is willing to set the standard
for corporate support. We are proud to have them as partners in
this effort."
The National Infantry Museum and Heritage Park will be built on
200 acres connecting Columbus, Georgia, and Fort Benning, the Home
of the Infantry. It will include a 170,000 square foot museum, a
collection and restoration facility, a memorial walk of honor and
a parade field where 30,000 soldiers will graduate from Infantry
training each year.
The Foundation is continuing to raise funds toward
its goal of $70 million. Groundbreaking on the new facility is expected
in fall 2004, with completion anticipated in late 2006.
